Frequently asked questions

What is LiveCanvas?

LiveCanvas is a web app that allows you to draw in your browser.

It was inspired by Portal Graphics’ openCanvas v2.0 which would allow people to connect and draw together. It was great!

What is a session?

Sessions are names for using the drawing app either by yourself or with others.

Sessions are created by an individual who acts as the session owner, or otherwise called the host.

Sessions can be online or offline:

  • Offline sessions are only available to the session owner to draw in
  • Online sessions can be available to multiple users to draw in

Up to 4 users can be connected to the same online session.

What is a public session?

A public session is one where other users can connect via a publicly accessible URL.

Public sessions do not have any form of gatekeeping – if there are available spaces to join in and others have the URL, they can join straight away.

If the session is already full (i.e. up to 4 users already connected) then no other users can join.

What is a private session?

A private session is one where only specifically invited users can connect via individualised URLs.

Private sessions are protected and will only admit invitees to join.

If the session is already full (i.e. up to 4 users already connected) then no other users can join.

Why do I need a Bluesky account to login?

You don’t need a Bluesky account to use LiveCanvas (you can draw in an offline private session as a guest), but if you want to save your drawings and brush presets to your device, then you need some kind of account identifier that is protected with authentication.

LiveCanvas leverages ATProto OAuth to ensure that if you do wish to store your drawings and brush presets to your device that they are protected, as well as proving that you are who you really are in online sessions.

Can I use this on my phone?

I’m not entirely sure. Theoretically yes, however the interface hasn’t been optimised for mobile phone… yet.

It would be nice to have phone supported. It is very much at the end of the priority list, though!

Can I use this on my tablet?

I’ve done some testing myself using an iPad Pro 12.9" gen6, but it’s not been extensive, but yes—it does work!

If you come across any issues, feel free to report them.

Can I help?

Yes! You can donate towards hosting and development, or buy something in my shop!

Otherwise if you are using the app and come across any issues, feel free to report them.

Is this made with AI?

Yes! This is a project by LVL99 to explore AI-augmented coding and workflow practices. This was made with Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 model, started on 14 October 2026.
